About the Maldives
Asia’s smallest country, the Maldives is made up of over a thousand coral islands off the shores of Sri Lanka and India. It is a Muslim nation with only a small percentage of secret Christians. These Christians live in constant fear of being discovered as Christianity is heavily repressed and conversion to Christianity results in losing citizenship. Christian missionaries and Christian literature are not permitted to enter the country and only the Gospel of Luke and Acts are available in the local language. The Maldives is a hot-spot for radical Islam and dozens of radicalised Muslims leave the country to join extremist organisations. Serious social problems exist, including having one of the highest divorce rates in the world, rising crime rates and gang activity, child abuse and widespread drug use amongst young people.
Problems to be solved
The oppression and resistance towards Christianity makes the nation one of the least reached by the Gospel in the world. Pray for Christians within the nation to be protected and for religious freedom to be granted and upheld by those in authority. Pray that the Maldives would be reached and transformed by the Gospel of Christ.
